Fly Girls
By
Kathy Hancock

Hosted by the Albuquerque Ninety-Nines. Members who participated were: Greta Moore (Chapter Chairman), Barbara Fricke (Secretary), Kathy Hancock (Vice Chairman and Webmaster), Anna Taylor (Treasurer), and Elaine Roderick. We were also joined by Michelle Davis-Judd (former NASA education consultant) from the Antelope Valley Chapter in California who lives here and is a part of what we do.

The girls heard about how we are involved in flying, they made balsa planes and did a flight plan and flew a cross country flight. We had distance races and trophies for the winners. We taught them about some basic physics of flight, showed them a typical flight bag, let them try on the equipment, served refreshments and gave them a goodie bag filled with aviation related activities, treats and charts. Every year after we do this event, the girls are featured in the school's yearbook. The girls are all third graders at Governor Bent Elementary where I am the computer teacher.

This event started as a way for the Girl Scout troop at our school to earn their aerospace badge, but the school doesn't have a Girl Scout troop any longer. So we just continued holding this event annually for our third graders to have the same experience. They love it.
